Claude Monet, founder of impressionist painting and key precursor to European modernism, today remains one of the best-loved of all artists. An adventurous landscape painting for its time, Port Goulphar Belle-Iles was painted in 1887, and depicts the jagged cliffs and rough seas of Belle Île, an island off the coast of Brittany.
