Painted largely outdoors at Emu Plains according to 19th-century plein-air conventions, Spring Frost was awarded the Wynne Prize in 1919. With its impeccable sense of light and tone, vigorous foreground brushwork and gentle country scenery it is not hard to see why Spring Frost is one of the most enduringly popular Australian landscape paintings in the Gallery collection.
