Brett Whiteley is one of Australia’s most celebrated artists, best known for his sensual and lyrical paintings of interiors, nudes and harbour scenes. Painted in 1976, Self portrait in the studio exudes a sense of sumptuous living whilst hinting at darker themes including the artists’ struggles with addiction. Considered a highly unconventional portrait at the time, it won the 1976 Archibald Prize and was acquired into the Art Gallery of NSW Collection in 1977.
