Australian painter Roy de Maistre was a pioneer of modern Australian painting and remains best known for his early collaborative experiments in colour and abstract form with fellow artist Roland Wakelin in Sydney around 1918-19. Together they explored the relationship between art and music, creating abstract compositions based on analogies between colours of the spectrum and notes of the musical scale - of which Rhythmic composition in yellow green minor by De Maistre is the finest example.
