Australian artist Jeffrey Smart was dedicated to representing the modern city. He saw beauty in the urban landscape and having absorbed the influences of Australian modernism in the 1940s, worked in a distinctive, highly finished and detailed style. Smart spent much of his time living and working abroad, but in the 12 years Smart lived in Sydney, he made a number of works about the city’s most famous beach, Bondi, including The Surfers, Bondi (1963).
