Eugene von Guérard is best known for his large-scale paintings of dramatic views of the Australian bush, painted in the romantic tradition of the sublime. One of his most famed works, Milford Sound captures the spectacular Milford Sound fiord in New Zealand’s South Island. The artist traveled to New Zealand 1876 and produced the painting in his Melbourne studio, from numerous drawings made during his trip.
